How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg completed the season sweep of Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Southern Virginia with an 11-9 victory in Buena Vista, Va. on Wednesday afternoon, April 17.

Miguel Torres racked up a game-high four hits and three runs scored, while Ryan McSorley and Travis Van Houten each hit timely home runs. Zach Gettys got the start on the bump for the Lions (23-8-1, 10-5 CAC), Brendan Riotto earned the win and Van Houten clinched the save.

After his team fell behind 1-0 in the early going, Bret Williams tied the game with an RBI double that plated Torres in top of the third inning. The visitors again fell behind when the Knights (13-9, 4-6 CAC) used a two-run home run to pull ahead 3-1 but the top of the fourth saw the Blue & White take their first lead thanks to Tyler Aug's RBI double and RBI singles from Torres and McSorley.

With the game tied 4-4 in the top of the sixth, Williams drove in another run with a single before Van Houten's sacrifice fly to center field allowed Aug to tag up and score. McSorley gave the Lions some breathing room thanks to a three-run home run in the top of the seventh but SVU showed fight by scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame to draw even at 9-9.

Van Houten led off the eighth inning by homering to put Penn State Harrisburg back out in front before the Lions added an insurance run thanks to a Southern Virginia error in the top of the ninth.
