How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg wrapped up its weekend series against Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foe and No. 16 Salisbury, falling 14-5 on Sunday afternoon, March 31.

Travis Van Houten's recent success continued, as he finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in a pair of runs, while Miguel Torres and Ryan McSorley finished with two hits apiece. Zach Gettys turned in a solid effort against one of the nation's top teams, allowing just three earned runs and striking out a pair of batters.

The Seagulls (17-4-1, 9-0 CAC) took advantage of a couple Blue & White errors and a passed ball to plate three unearned runs in the first two innings but the Lions got on the board in the bottom of the second when Jackson Struve's single through the left side drove in McSorley.

Salisbury tacked on another run in the top of the next stanza but the bottom half saw the Blue & White respond with three tallies of their own. Torres singled to push Smith across before Van Houten hammered a two-run shot over the fence in left center field that tied the score at 4-4.

After both teams went scoreless in the fourth frame, the visitors made the Lions pay for a couple of miscues in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs, four of which were unearned.

A Seagull error allowed Penn State Harrisburg to add another run when Van Houten came around from second base thanks to an errant throw on a double play attempt in the bottom of the fifth but Salisbury plated four runs in the ensuing three frames to put things out of reach.
