How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg's recent roll continued with an impressive 13-2 victory at Susquehanna in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon, March 20.

The Lions (11-2-1) tallied five extra-base hits, including four doubles, led by four base knocks from Bret Williams. Travis Van Houten racked up a game-high four RBI thanks to a home run and a double, while Miguel Torres and Ryan McSorley also had multi-hit outings. Brad Richards earned his second win of the season on the mound after throwing 3.2 innings.

The Blue & White struck first when Van Houten's double plated Williams in the top of the first. The visitors doubled their lead when Jackson Struve's sacrifice fly allowed Tyler Aug to come home in the top of the second.

Three scoreless innings ensued before the River Hawks (2-7) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. That run seemed to spark the Penn State Harrisburg bats, however, as the team blew the game wide open in the top of the seventh.

Van Houten continued his outstanding start to the 2019 campaign with a 3-run home run over the fence in center field that brought Williams and Torres around with him before Casey Winters' sac fly scored McSorley. Chase Smith capped the stanza's scoring with a single that plated Zachary Koroneos and Tyler Aug, pushing the advantage to a comfortable 8-1.

The scoring continued in the top of the eighth when Williams doubled to left center field, driving in Torres in the process. McSorley followed it up with a double of his own, allowing Williams to come across and make it 10-1.

The top of the ninth saw the Blue & White tack on three more runs when a Matt Parks' single pushed Struve across and a Susquehanna error on a Ryan McSorley ground ball allowed Tucker Ell and Parks to put a cap on the team's scoring.
