Harrisburg Splits With Hornets

Lynchburg, VA – Penn State Harrisburg's Baseball spilt its doubleheader against Lynchburg College taking game 2, 5-2. The Lions racked up an impressive 26 hits in the twin bill, lead by Chase Smith who had five hits and drove in three runs on the day. Brett Williams added four more hits including a go ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning of game 2. Zach Gettys led the pitching staff going four and a third innings allowing just one hit and striking out five Hornets.

How it Happened:

The Lions jumped out early in Game 1, taking a first inning lead when Miguel Torres put a ball in play scoring Chase Smith. Josh Brubaker would score on a bulk and Tyler Aug would triple to center field scoring Torres and putting the Lions ahead 3-0. Lynchburg would stringing hits together in the second, fourth, and fifth innings to build a six run advantage. The Lions would attempt to rally in the sixth inning behind a two-run double by Zachary Koroneos. Alex Cline would then reach on an error allowing Koroneos to score cutting the deficit to three. Chase Smith would blast a solo home run over the right field fence in the eighth inning to close within two runs. The Lions would get the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but could not complete the comeback.

 

Lynchburg grabbed an early 1-0 lead in game 2, but both offenses struggled early to find any rhythm, thanks to strong pitch performances by Austin Kunkel and Zach Gettys. Kunkel allow 5 hits while striking out four Hornets. In relief, Gettys dominated allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out five more Lynchburg batters. Smith would tie the game in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a single down the left field line to score Justin O'Dell. After Lynchburg recaptured the lead in the bottom half of the inning, Bret Williams put the Lions in control with a 2-run home run to left center field. The Lions would add two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning in route to the 5-3 victory.
