MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - (RV) Penn State Harrisburg picked up a pair of victories over United East foe Wilson on Sunday afternoon, March 29, to remain unbeaten in conference play. Fisher Druck became the program's all-time leader in wins in a 4-3 decision before the Lions rolled to a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.
GAME 1
Druck turned in one of the best outings of his career during game one of Sunday's doubleheader, racking up a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowing just one earned run in seven innings thrown to secure his program-record 22nd career win. James Quici had a multi-hit game, Tim Haftl drove in two runs and Bryant Allison recorded his first career save to seal the victory.
The Lions (14-8, 3-0 United East) used two hits, including Haftl's two-out, two-RBI double down the first base line, to put up three runs in the first inning. Druck followed by striking out the side in the top of the second and the home team eventually added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Quici tripled to left field with two away, scoring Zach Neeld from first base in the process.
The Phoenix (3-11-1, 2-1 United East) finally broke through in the seventh, using three hits and an error to score three runs and cut the deficit to one but Druck picked off Cody Valentine at third base to end his day on the mound, the inning and the threat.
The leadoff man and potential tying run reached base for Wilson in the top of the ninth but catcher Coy Schwanger threw out Zachary Tyler attempting to steal his way into scoring position and Allison did the rest, striking out the final two batters he faced to seal the historic win for Druck and keep the Lions' conference record unblemished.
GAME 2
Penn State Harrisburg (15-8, 4-0 United East) jumped out to a comfortable lead to begin the nightcap and never looked back in the game two win over the Phoenix (3-12-1, 2-2 United East).
Quici, Alexander Ruiz and Demetre Koutras III each had multi-hit games, while Sam Thompson earned the win on the bump after allowing just one run on two hits in six innings thrown.
After Thompson retired the Phoenix in order to begin the game, the Lions put up three runs in the bottom of the first. Ruiz and Schwanger each drove in runs thanks to RBI groundouts and Haftl came through with a two-out, RBI single that drove in Koutras from second base.
Three straight singles in the third allowed the home team to add another run, as Koutras' base knock to left field scored Ruiz from second and stretched the advantage to four. Penn State Harrisburg tacked on two more in the fourth when a Quici double plated Evan Stiles before a timely double steal pushed Quici across from third.
Wilson scored its lone run in the top of the fifth but the Lions immediately answered back in the bottom half when Halft's sac fly scored Schwanger and quickly pushed the lead back to six. Ruiz drove in Quici in the seventh, Braeden Piotrowski's RBI groundout plated Kaden Pasternak in the eighth and Kevin Kingsbury put a cap on the day's scoring with another double steal in the penultimate frame.
