WINCHESTER, Va. - Unearned runs cost (RV) Penn State Harrisburg in a 9-4 non-conference loss at No. 6/8 Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon, March 25.
Three errors cost the Lions (13-8), as the miscues led to seven unearned runs, all of which came during Shenandoah's lone big inning midway through the contest. Jon Morgante had a multi-hit game, while Coy Schwanger hit his first home run of the season. James Quici also drove in a pair of runs.
After the Hornets (20-4) struck first in the bottom of the opening frame, Penn State Harrisburg pulled ahead in the top of the fifth when Quici came through with a two-out single up the middle with the bases loaded that drove in Tim Haftl and Morgante. Bradyn Eckert retired Shenandoah in order in the bottom half and Schwanger swatted a two-run home run in the ensuing stanza to give the visitors a three-run advantage.
The bottom half proved the difference, however, as back-to-back errors and three overall extended an inning that should have ended with one runner left on base. Instead, the Hornets tied the game with back-to-back, one-out singles before taking the lead with a backbreaking grand slam later in the frame.
The Lions moved a pair of runners into scoring position with two outs in the seventh but were unable to score, effectively ending their hopes of a late-game comeback.
