MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - In a battle of regionally-ranked programs, Penn State Harrisburg's women's soccer team was narrowly edged 2-1 by McDaniel at the college's turf complex on Wednesday night, Sept. 16.
Mackenzie Mowery netted the lone goal for Penn State Harrisburg (3-3-1), with a returning Kylie Yap providing the assist on the marker.
The Green Terror (3-2-1) struck first early in the opening half when Chloe Workman was able to get a touch on a loose ball in the Penn State Harrisburg box and put it into the back of the net just six and a half minutes into the contest.
The Lions (3-3-1) eventually turned the tide thanks to more aggressive play late in the first half and were rewarded when a corner kick opportunity led to Yap lofting a well-placed ball into the box and Mowery heading the equalizer past McDaniel goalkeeper Mack Langlo to tie things up with 6:18 left before the break.
The difference maker came 11 minutes into the second half when Sarah Hurley rainbowed an apparent cross from nearly 40 yards out toward the Penn State Harrisburg box. Despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Katherine Eimer, the ball had just enough velocity and touch to sneak over her outstretched arms, under the crossbar and into the back of the net with 33:57 remaining.
Penn State Harrisburg created multiple chances late in the game, sparked by a number of pretty moves from Diana Pon that resulted in screamers that were turned away by goalkeeper Sierra Ruehl. Serenity Hill also got off a header that looked to be heading to the left side of goal with less than a minute to play but McDaniel's Grace Duffey made the crucial defensive save to allow the Green Terror to escape with the win.
