DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team held off a late push from Delaware Valley in a 68-63 non-conference victory on Thursday night, Dec. 12.
Mikayla Coleman led the way with a game-high 21 points, while Jordan Carpenter recorded a double-double 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sam Shaak was the third player to reach double figures with her first career double-double thanks to 10 points and 11 boards.
After falling behind 5-2 in the early going, Penn State Harrisburg (7-3) put together a 10-0 run that culminated with a Carpenter putback that made it 12-5 with 3:49 left in the opening quarter.
After holding a five-point advantage after one, the Lions stretched the lead to eight early in the second but Delaware Valley (2-5) clawed back into it and pulled ahead 30-29 with 2:09 remaining before halftime. The teams traded buckets but back-to-back layups from Ali Lister gave the visitors a 38-36 edge heading into the break.
The Lions opened the third quarter with an 8-1 spurt and pulled ahead by as many as nine points when Lauren Moffatt converted a layup at the 7:19 mark but the home team closed out the period strong, drawing even late before a Carpenter layup in transition gave Penn State Harrisburg a slim 54-52 lead after three.
Del Val used a Jayla Rivera 3-ball to draw even with eight minutes to play but the Penn State Harrisburg defense stemmed the tide and kept the home team from scoring a point for the next 6:55, allowing the Lions to create enough separation to fend off the Aggies' last gasp and escape enemy territory with the win.
