St. Mary's (Md.) Escapes Field Hockey With Narrow OT Victory

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's field hockey team suffered its first conference loss of the season by the narrowest of margins, dropping a 1-0 decision to United East foe St. Mary's (Md.) in overtime on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 12.

After 60 scoreless minutes of play in regulation, the Lions (8-4, 1-1 United East) had an opportunity to strike midway through the extra session but could not convert on a penalty corner at the 4:33 mark. The Seahawks (4-9, 2-0 United East) took advantage late in the period when a driving Sofia Lopez slid to the corner of the cage and tapped home a Brenna Ziegler feed to end the contest with 2:09 left in overtime.

In a back-and-forth, evenly-matched affair, Penn State Harrisburg shook off an early St. Mary's penalty corner opportunity, took control of possession, and got off five attempts in the opening frame. The squads traded penalty corners early in the second half before each team's defense locked down, refusing to cede a shot in the final eight minutes before halftime.

After the break, the visitors possessed the ball for much of the third frame but goalkeeper Macenzie Mulholland was game, turning away the only shot on goal in the quarter. Natalie Rocuskie got a decent look in front to begin the fourth period but SMC's Sophia Kent made the save. Mulholland took over in the closing minutes, making four crucial stops down the stretch to keep the game scoreless and send the contest to overtime.
