Softball Drops a Pair In Myrtle Beach On Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Penn State Harrisburg dropped a pair of contests on the first day of the team's spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Sunday, March 8. The Blue & White fell to Centenary (N.J.) 10-3 before being edged 9-7 by Fitchburg State.

Madelyn Pyle had a memorable Penn State Harrisburg debut, going 2-for-4 with a run scored against Centenary (N.J.) in the opener, while Madelyn Krantz, Sarah Coolbaugh and Delaney Nevius all had multi-hit outings against Fitchburg State later in the day.

The Lions (0-2) fell behind 2-0 in their first contest but were aided by a Cyclone error that allowed Pyle and Coolbaugh to come across and tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The top of the sixth saw Centenary (N.J.) plate five runs, however, and take control of the game.

Krantz drove in Sierra Dixon with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame but that's as close as the Blue & White would come to mounting a comeback, as the Cyclones tacked on the rest of their run total in the top of the seventh to put things out of reach.

The nightcap saw the Penn State Harrisburg offense come to life in the middle stanzas, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a bases-clearing triple from Dominique Emmett and a Nevius RBI single. The four-run half inning gave the Lions their first lead of the game at 6-4.

Fitchburg State responded with a run in the top of the sixth before using a bases-clearing double to pull back ahead in the top of the seventh. Nevius drove in another run with another RBI single in the bottom of the final frame but the Falcons were able to hang on to secure the narrow victory.

The Lions return to action on Monday morning, March 9. They take on Medaille at 11:30 a.m. before wrapping up the day's competition against Dean at 2:30 p.m.
