Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – It took a bit longer than they would have liked, but the ladies of the Penn State Harrisburg women's tennis team finally broke through and picked up their first victory of 2012. The Lions hit the road to take on Baptist Bible on Friday, Sep. 28 and took care of business by besting the home team 7-2.
Doubles play provided just one close contest for the blue and white, as Penn State Harrisburg's number one pairing of Gabrielle LeGendre (East Stroudsburg, Pa. / Notre Dame) and Theodora Avramidis (Glenwood, N.J. / Vernon Township) topped the Defenders' top duo 8-2. Alejandra Portillo (Palmyra, Pa. / Palmyra) and Tricia Stone (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown), the Lions' number two team, had to work a bit harder to pick up the 9-7 win. The duo of Amanda Jones (Bronx, N.Y. / Cardinal Spellman) and Amanda Herr (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Central) were awarded a victory when Baptist Bible's number three group retired with the score 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
The ladies were also solid in singles play. LeGendre, the squad's top player, earned a 2-1 victory when the Defenders' Dahlia Orth retired. The number two Lion in Avramidis soundly defeated her Baptist Bible counterpart 6-1, 6-2.
The home team picked up two points thanks to victories in the number three and four slots but that was all the Defenders could salvage from an otherwise dominating performance by Penn State Harrisburg.
The blue and white's Amandas in Herr and Jones wrapped things up nicely for the Lions by nabbing wins in the number five and six matches.
With the goal of grabbing that elusive first win now realized, Penn State Harrisburg hopes to continue to play at a high level when the Lions host Cairn University at the Hoverter Tennis Complex on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
