MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Penn State Harrisburg dropped a 3-1 decision to a strong Gettysburg squad at the Capital Union Building on Wednesday night, Sept. 2. The Lions took the opening set 25-19 before dropping the final three 17-25, 17-25 and 16-25.
Penn State Harrisburg (1-1) started the first set with six straight points on
Brianna Ondishin Ribon's serve, getting three early kills from
Camryn Wettstone, two service aces, and a block involving
Ellie Brown on the way to a 6-0 lead. The home side kept creating separation through the middle of the set, with Ondishin Ribon,
Tesia Oliva and
Ellie Brown adding kills before
Mackenzy Miller's ace made it 15-7. The Bullets (1-0) later put together four consecutive points to make it 19-16, but the Lions stopped that stretch with another Wettstone kill and followed with points from Ondishin Ribon and a Gettysburg attack error.
Emily Miller added a late kill, and
Nicole Dos Santos closed the set with a kill to give the home team an early advantage.
Gettysburg stretched a 7-6 lead into a 14-8 advantage midway through the second set. The Lions made a late push when E. Miller and Brown added kills, with Brown's side-out making it 24-17 but Erin Gonzalez finished the set for the Bullets at 25-17. Penn State Harrisburg's main push in the third came after the Bullets built a 10-5 lead, with Brown and Wettstone delivering kills during a three-point response that brought the home side within 10-8. The Bullets responded with four straight points but an Ondishin Ribon block made it 22-15 and the home team got late kills from Wettstone before the visitors closed out the set. The final set was tight for a long stretch, with Penn State Harrisburg remaining in striking distance but Gettysburg used a late spurt to pull away and eventually clinch the non-conference win.
