SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Penn State Harrisburg defeated (RV) Randolph-Macon 12-8 in Sunday morning's opening NCAA Regional contest at Central Park "A" Diamond before being edged 3-0 by the Yellow Jackets in the regional's final, winner-take-all contest in the afternoon.
The Lions (36-15) completed their 2026 campaign by winning the most games in a single season in program history, advancing to an NCAA Regional final for the first time, and capturing their fifth conference championship.Â
GAME 1
Penn State Harrisburg (36-14) erased an early 5-1 deficit and defeated Randolph-Macon (28-15) 12-8 in Sunday's first contest to reach the deciding game of an NCAA Regional for the first time in program history.Â
Blaine Waltimyer reached base three times and hit his 11th home run of the season, while James Quici worked three walks, tripled, and drove in three runs. Demetre Koutras III doubled and scored three runs, while Chris Catania, Coy Schwanger, Alexander Ruiz, and Nathan Lapp each had multi-hit outings. Jack Maguire threw 2.2 strong innings of relief to earn the win.Â
After the Yellow Jackets put up a four spot in the bottom of the third, the Lions responded with four of their own in the top of the fourth. Lapp led off the stanza with a solo home run and Waltimyer blasted a two-run shot over the fence in center field to cut the deficit to one before a Catania single up the middle plated Koutras to tie things up.
Randolph-Macon retook the lead in the fifth but Penn State Harrisburg put up four more in the sixth to pull ahead for the final time. Lapp was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded, Quici worked a bases-loaded walk, and Schwanger laced a single through the right side that scored Lapp and Ruiz.Â
An error allowed the Lions to stretch the lead to 10-6 in the top of the ninth and Quici put things out of reach with a triple to straightaway center field that plated Ruiz and Tim Haftl before reliever Cade Baker closed out the contest in the bottom of the ninth.Â
GAME 2
Penn State Harrisburg (36-15) outhit Randolph-Macon (29-15) 10-7 but couldn't come up with the timely base knock in a narrow, 3-0 loss in the final game of the weekend's NCAA Regional action at Central Park "A" Diamond in Schenectady, N.Y.
Quici doubled and reached base four times, while Ruiz had a three-hit game. Relievers Caiden Ertter, Drew Barshinger, Fisher Druck, and Bryant Allison combined for 6.2 scoreless innings of relief.Â
The Yellow Jackets did their damage in the first two innings, pushing one across in the opening frame and two more in the top of the second. From there, Penn State Harrisburg pitchers allowed just four hits and one walk, shutting down the Randolph-Macon lineup the rest of the game.Â
The Lions had baserunners in every inning but the final one, tallying 10 hits and working four walks. Unfortunately, they stranded eight runners in scoring position. Including a pair at second and third in the seventh before leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth.Â
