Men's Tennis Advances to United East Championship Match

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's men's tennis team secured their spot in the United East Championship contest thanks to a 4-0 win over Penn State Berks in the semifinal round on Friday, May 1.


The hometown Lions (10-7) set the tone in doubles play, starting with Cooper Wheeler and Damir Cuturic who earned a 6-1 victory over Talan Nguyen and Jazae Maina-Itegi in the top matchup. Ved Pawar and Colin Flack secured a 6-3 win over Donovan Sullivan and Joseph Martin in the second contest and the No. 3 duo of Ian Opitz and Arnav Gupta were leading Evan Imschweiler and Caleb Corjuc 5-3 before the match ended unfinished.


Pawar, Cuturic, and Michael Rivino helped secure the semifinal victory in the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 contests, respectively. Pawar topped Maina-Itegi 6-1, 6-0 in the second singles pairing, Cuturic earned a 6-0, 6-1 decision in third contest, and Rivino defeated Corjuc 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth matchup. Wheeler, Opitz, and Flack all competed in singles competition and were leading in their individual contests before they remained unfinished.


The Lions are set to defend their United East Championship title on Sunday, May 3 against St. Mary's College of Maryland. The championship match will be held at Hempfield Rec Center in Hempfield, Pa. at 10 a.m.
