Baseball Holds Off Marymount (Va.) to Win Fifth In a Row

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's baseball team overcame an early deficit and defeated non-conference foe Marymount (Va.) 6-4 on Monday evening, April 13, to extend its recent win streak to five in a row.


Demetre Koutras III and Chris Catania each had a multi-hit games, while Tim Haftl drove in three runs. Caiden Ertter earned his first win of the season after throwing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, while Benjamin Ross secured his first save of the spring. 


The Saints (16-12) struck first with a single run in the top of the first and two more in the second but Penn State Harrisburg (23-10) got one back in the bottom half when Catania's single to shortstop drove in Koutras. 


Ertter retired Marymount in order in the top of the third and worked around a leadoff single in the fourth before the Lions used three hits to plate three runs in the home half. Haftl singled up the middle to drive in Koutras and Alexander Ruiz and Catania followed with an RBI single to left field that gave Penn State Harrisburg a lead it wouldn't relinquish. 


The home team tacked on some insurance in the sixth when Haftl and Nathan Lapp each drove in a single run thanks to sacrifice flies. The Saints cut into the deficit with a single run in the seventh but Ross entered in the eighth and worked around four hits to keep the visitors off the board and pick up his first save of the year.


NOTABLES 
- The Lions have won eight of their last nine games. 
- Catania was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. 
- Koutras finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 
- Haftl drove in three runs and scored another. 
- Ruiz went 1-for-2 a walk and two runs scored.
- Ertter earned the win, throwing 2.1 innings of relief and allowing just one hit and no runs.
- Ross secured the save, allowing four hits and no runs in the final two innings of work.

The Lions get back to conference play when they travel to Penn State Branydwine on Wednesday afternoon.
