(RV) Baseball Finishes Off Weekend With Sweep of Stockton

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - (RV) Penn State Harrisburg wrapped up the weekend with a doubleheader sweep of non-conference opponent Stockton on Sunday afternoon, March 22, besting the Ospreys 8-4 in the opener before taking game two 12-9.

GAME 1
The top of Penn State Harrisburg's lineup provided the spark in the opener, as the one through five hitters combined for all 13 hits, including a two-run home run from Demetre Koutras III and doubles from Chris Catania and Coy Schwanger

Koutras got the scoring started with an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the first but Stockton (4-7) used a pair of unearned runs to pull ahead in the fourth inning. The Lions (11-7) responded with a three-run bottom of the fourth that saw Alexander Ruiz drive in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle before the home team tacked on two more in the fifth thanks to a James Quici RBI base knock and a Stockton error.

The decisive blow came in the bottom of the seventh when Koutras ripped a ball over the fence in left field, bringing Coy Schwanger around with him to extend the advantage to five. Reliever Cade Baker induced three ground balls in the top of the ninth to close things out and secure the day's first victory.

GAME 2
The Lions (12-7) put up runs in all but two innings of their game two victory and held off a mid-game rally from Stockton (4-8) to complete the Sunday sweep.

Tim Haftl led the way with three hits, three runs and a two RBI, while Zach Neeld hit the first home run of his young career. Matthew Johansen and Jon Morgante also had themselves multi-hit outings. Drew Barshinger turned in a solid start, Dylan Sattazahn earned the win and Traeton Sauder secured the save.

The Ospreys took an early two-run lead in the top of the first but Penn State Harrisburg responded with four runs in the bottom half, keyed by Haftl's two-run double and followed up by an RBI single from Morgante. The Lions tacked on two more in the second when Neeld belted a homer to left field before Quici followed with an RBI groundout.

The home team took its largest lead of the day when Neeld singled home Haftl in the third but Stockton eventually took advantage of three hit by pitches and an error to pull even at 7-7 in the top of the fifth. Johansen proved game in the bottom half, however, and answered with a two-out double to left center that scored Haftl and gave the Lions a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way.

Penn State Harrisburg added three insurance runs in the seventh and another in the eighth on a wild pitch. The play of the day came from Catania in the top of the ninth when he robbed Yenuelle Rodriguez of a two-run home run by leaping above the fence in straightaway center field to snag a deep fly ball and preserve the three-run advantage. Sauder eventually got Matthew McCloskey to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and complete the doubleheader sweep.
