(RV) Baseball Falls In Final Frame to Defending National Runner-Up

GRANTHAM, Pa. - (RV) Penn State Harrisburg dropped its third consecutive one-run game on the road on Thursday afternoon, falling 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth to the defending national runners-up from Messiah.

Tim Haftl had himself a two-hit day, while Blaine Waltimyer hit his second home run of the season, drove in two runs and scored two more. Jack Maguire was solid in relief, surrendering just one hit without allowing a run in 2.1 innings of work.

After falling behind in the early going, Penn State Harrisburg (8-7) erased a two-run deficit with one swing when Waltimyer swatted a 1-2 pitch over the fence in right field, bringing Chris Catania around with him and tying the game in the top of the fifth.

The Falcons (6-7) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead but the visitors got one back in the sixth when Tim Haftl's RBI double drove in Demetre Koutras III. The Lions kept the bats going in the seventh and eventually pulled even when Alexander Ruiz doubled and plated Waltimyer in the process. Penn State Harrisburg loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't push the go-ahead run across.

Messiah took advantage of a leadoff walk to begin the bottom of the ninth and followed with a single up the middle that moved the winning run into scoring position. After a sacrifice bunt and intentional walk, Carter Reid proved the hero with a seeing-eye single through the left side that secured the walkoff win.
