Women's Volleyball Wins Third in a Row

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's volleyball team won its third straight contest and remained unbeaten in conference play thanks to a sweep of United East foe Notre Dame (Md.) at the Capital Union Building on Wednesday night, Oct. 14. The Lions secured the victory by set scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-21.

Reigning United East Defensive Player of the Week Brianna Ondishin Ribon finished with a match-high 14 kills, seven digs, and a pair of service aces, while reigning United East Offensive Player of the Week Camryn Wettstone tallied 10 kills and six digs. Mackenzy Miller had 13 assists, Tobi West racked up 14 assists and three aces, and Mollie Shadle added three aces of her own.

The Lions (11-6, 5-0 United East) jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set during a Shadle service run but the Gators (7-12, 1-4 United East) fought back to pull to within one at 13-12 at the midway point. Penn State Harrisburg put together a mini-run to push the lead to four thanks to an Ondishin Ribon service ace. The home team led by as much as 24-17 before closing things out with a kill from West.

Notre Dame got out to an 8-4 lead to begin the second but the Lions clawed back to make it close midway through the set when they tied it up at 14-14. The home team went on a 8-0 run that started with a kill by Nicole Dos Santos and included a service ace by Dos Santos and a kill by Ondishin Ribon. The surge proved to be too much for the Gators to overcome and the Lions earned the second set 25-19.

The final set of the evening was a back-and-forth affair that ultimately saw Notre Dame have the lead for the first half of the frame. Although Penn State Harrisburg finally got out ahead when Ondishin Ribon had a service ace and Wettstone added a kill, the Gators found a way to gain the advantage once again 14-13. It was two back-to-back 3-point rallies that gave the hosts the slight edge that they needed to eventually earn the sweep with a 25-21 third-set victory.
