MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball was unable to keep up with United East foe Penn State Abington in an 80-60 loss at the Capital Union Building on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 3.
Mikayla Coleman finished with a game-high 25 points, while Molli Hogbin added eight points and four rebounds off the bench. Lauren Moffatt and Nicole Hernandez each pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Penn State Harrisburg (2-11, 1-2 United East) jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind an Allison Metzgar 3-ball, a jumper from Coleman and a pair of Moffatt free throws and eventually led by as much as 19-9 following back-to-back triples from Coleman with 3:54 left in the first quarter.
Over the next nine minutes, however, Penn State Abington (8-5, 2-1 United East) put together a pivotal 27-0 run that stretched to the midpoint of the second quarter before Hogbin ended the spurt with a jumper in the paint. Moffatt added a jump shot in the lane and Akira Cho connected on a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 10 at the 1:41 mark but the visitors converted a late bucket to take a 12-point lead into the break.
The teams played even for much of the third quarter until Penn State Abington used a 10-2 run to end the period to stretch the advantage to 24 after three. The visitors stayed hot to begin the fourth and built on their lead before the hometown Lions scored 10 straight points to end the contest but the comeback effort proved too little, too late.
