MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's volleyball team secured their first United East Conference victory against Notre Dame (Md.) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon, September 29.
The Lions (8-4, 1-0 United East) earned the sweep thanks to contributions from everyone against the Gators (7-3, 0-1 UEC), led by Brianna Ondishin-Ribon on offense who recorded 11 kills, while
Hannah DeGregory and
Camryn Wettstone both added eight kills apiece. DeGregory and
Mackenzy Miller worked together from the setter position, totaling 26 assists between the pair. On defense,
Kate Bukowski tallied 10 digs and
Jasmin Fowlkes had nine of her own against Notre Dame (Md.).
In the opening set, the home team surged ahead with a series of successful plays, including a service ace from
Nicole Dos Santos and a kill by Ondishin Ribon to give the Lions a 4-1 lead, setting the tone for the rest of the frame. Penn State Harrisburg extended the lead to double-digits when DeGregory and
Alex Jurney had back-to-back kills to bring the score to 24-13 before capitalizing off a Gator attack error and taking the first set.
Notre Dame (Md.) got out to an early 3-0 lead in the second set, but the Lions found their footing due in part to a four-point run halfway through the frame. The sequence included a pair of kills from Ondishin Ribon and a kill by M. Miller to give the home team the 13-9 edge. Although the Gators gradually shortened the gap, the Lions were able to take advantage of several Notre Dame (Md.) miscues and took set two 25-18.
The Lions didn't waste any time in the final set, as they got out to a 7-2 lead and maintained the edge throughout the remainder of the frame. A pair of errors by the visitors started the run, while consecutive kills by
Tesia Oliva and
Emily Miller capped the sequence off. During the last set, Bukowski shined specifically in the serving spot, as she posted three service aces during the frame.
