BALTIMORE, MD – The men's tennis team competed at the Goucher Invitational on Saturday, September 20. In total there were nine draws and over 48 players that competed in the singles and doubles brackets from six different teams, including Goucher, Gettysburg, Stevenson, Millersville, and Loyola College (Md). The Blue and White fared well overall on the afternoon.
DOUBLES FLIGHT A
Wheeler and Cuturic highlighted a strong day for the Lions making a championship appearance in the Flight A Bracket. They opened the day with a 6-1 win over Loyola's Kozio/Girondola and followed it with a 7-5 win against the Millersville tandem of Duclos/Oetliker to advance to the championship. The final championship match was not played due to a withdraw.
DOUBLES FLIGHT B
Opitz and Flack competed in the Flight B bracket and dropped both of their matches to Goucher's and Gettysburg's doubles teams, 1-6, and 2-6 respectively.
DOUBLES FLIGHT C
Gupta/McCarthy and Harris/Lines competed in the Flight C bracket. After dropping each of their respective opening matches by scores of 3-6 and 1-6, both duos turned in wins against a couple of Stevenson's doubles pairings to make the consolation final. The win from Lines/Ahmed was a thrilling 7-6(4) against the Stevenson duo while McCarthy/Gupta took their match 6-0. Drawed against each other in the consolation final, McCarthy/Gupta won 7-5.
SINGLES FLIGHT A
Cooper Wheeler continued his strong outing in the singles bracket. After taking down Axel Duclos from Millersville 8-3, he rolled through Gettysburg's Connor McPartland 8-2. Wheeler would fall in the championship to Loyola's Blake Edwards 2-8.
SINGLES FLIGHT B
After dropping his first match to Millersville's Adrian Weisser,
Damir Cuturic rebounded with two strong wins against Gettysburg's JP Damere (8-0) and Matt Porreca (8-4) to claim the consolation final.
SINGLES FLIGHT C
Ian Opitz dropped his first match to Gettysburg's O'Conner Skloot 4-8 before receiving a bye to the consolation final. Opitz would roll 8-1 against Gettysburg's Cooper Dickson.
SINGLES FLIGHT D
Andrew Lines dropped both of his singles sets in the Flight D bracket. He fell to Loyola's Girondola 0-8 before falling to Gettysburg's Lazrow 4-8.
SINGLES FLIGHT E
Colin Flack and
John McCarthy both competed in the Flight E bracket. Both dropped their opening matchups by scores of 0-8, and 4-8 respectively. Both would also fall in their following matchups to Stevenson opponents.
SINGLES FLIGHT F
Harris Ahmed and
Arnav Gupta competed in the Flight F bracket. After falling in their opening matches by scores of 0-8 and 1-8 respectively, they ending up drawing each other for the next match. Gupta won in a close 8-6 battle before falling 4-8 to Dickson from Gettysburg to round out the afternoon.
