Women's Volleyball Sweeps Alvernia In Home Opener

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Thanks to a total team effort in the squad's home opener, Penn State Harrisburg women's volleyball topped Alvernia 3-0 at the Capital Union Building on Tuesday night, Sept. 16. The Lions (5-3) rolled to a 25-8, 25-15, 25-16 sweep.  


Brianna Ondishin Ribon tallied a match-high nine kills, while reigning United East Offensive Player of the Week Hannah DeGregory and Nicole Dos Santos each finished with six aces. Mackenzy Miller racked up 15 assists and Kate Bukowski finished with a match-best 12 digs.


The home team dominated the first set, opening with a solid start as Miller contributed to an early lead with a block and a kill, pushing the score to 2-0. DeGregory's precise setting fueled a six-point scoring streak in the middle of the set, highlighted by her service ace and a kill by Ondishin Ribon that extended the lead to 10-3. Alex Jurney then served an impressive six consecutive points and the Lions capitalized on multiple attack errors by the Golden Wolves (4-4), sealing the set with a lopsided 25-8 victory.


Penn State Harrisburg opened the second set with a commanding performance, taking an early lead at 3-0 with a service ace from Dos Santos and a kill by Ondishin Ribon. DeGregory's serving prowess continued with back-to-back aces, extending the lead to 11-2. The home team maintained its momentum with Camryn Wettstone and Emily Miller delivering crucial kills and despite a late push from Alvernia, Ondishin Ribon's kill sealed the set at 25-15.


The Lions initiated the third set with a strong defensive effort, quickly capitalizing on attack errors to take a 6-4 lead. DeGregory's service ace made it 9-5, followed by Ondishin Ribon's kill from Mackenzy Miller, extending the home team's advantage. Dos Santos delivered a crucial sequence of three consecutive service aces to push the score to 21-11. Tesia Oliva and Wettstone contributed late kills, with DeGregory securing the final point with a kill off a Miller feed.
