LATHAM, N.Y. - Thanks to their outstanding efforts in a pair of victories over the weekend, Penn State Harrisburg field hockey players Ami Mattingly and Sara Yeselavage have swept the season's first United East Player of the Week Awards. Mattingly was named the conference's offensive player of the week, while Yeselavage earned defensive player of the week recognition.
Mattingly turned in a memorable debut for Penn State Harrisburg, helping lead the Lions to a pair of shutout victories while recording two hat tricks and setting a number of single-game program records. In her first game with the program, the fifth-year player scored three times, including the game winner, in a decisive 5-0 win over Albright on Friday afternoon. She added a helper to set the single-game program record for total points (7). The forward followed it up with her second three-goal game in as many outings during a comfortable 4-0 victory over Goucher on Sunday afternoon. For the weekend, the Mechanicsburg, Pa. native twice matched the program's single-game scoring record (3) en route to racking up 13 total points on six goals, including two game winners, and one assist.
Yeselavage was one of the defensive catalysts for Penn State Harrisburg in the pair of shutout victories. In the season-opening win on Saturday afternoon, the Harrisburg, Pa. native turned away all potential comers and kept Albright from getting off a single shot. In the victory over Goucher two days later, the center back continued to make life easy on goalkeeper Macenzie Mulholland by stifling the Gophers offense to the tune of just one shot on goal. Thanks to the sophomore's efforts, Penn State Harrisburg allowed just three total attempts and just one shot on frame across the pair of shutout wins.
The Lions (2-0) return to action at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 6.
