LEXINGTON, Va. – Another historic season came to an end for Penn State Harrisburg's women's tennis team in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of No. 21 Swarthmore on the campus of Washington & Lee on Friday afternoon, May 9.
The Lions (15-8) dropped the No. 3 doubles match by decision, while
Anita Liu and
Sarah Shaub fell 6-0 to Kathleen Shiffer and Erin Li in the No. 2 contest.
Allison Wootton and
Breanna DeSantis took a point from Lola Diaz and Nathalie Williams in the top doubles matchup and trailed 4-1 when play was halted.
Singles play saw the Garnet (17-4) secure a point by default in the sixth contest before Lisa Messier topped Shaub 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 outing. Ella Strickler clinched the match for Swarthmore with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over
Hailey Dey in the No. 4 contest. Wootton matched up with Williams in the top solo outing and was behind 6-1, 4-1 when play was stopped, while DeSantis trailed Li 6-1, 2-1 in the No. 2 contest. Shiffer led Liu 6-0, 5-0 in the No. 3 pairing when play was ended.
