MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – No. 12/15 Penn State Harrisburg used a monster first inning to race out to a sizable lead and defeat United East foe Saint Elizabeth 12-3 in a shortened contest called after five innings due to weather on Wednesday afternoon, April 2.
Brendan Henn,
Alexander Ruiz and
Lucas Floyd each had multi-hit games and drove in two runs apiece. Demetre Koutras doubled and walked twice, while
Blaine Waltimyer scored two runs and swiped three bases.
Christian Lubic II earned the win after throwing all five innings.
The Lions (19-4-1, 4-1 United East) wasted no time creating separation, as 14 men came to the plate to begin the game. Penn State Harrisburg worked two walks, stole five bases and used nine hits to take an early 9-0 lead. Henn drove in a run with an RBI single in his first at-bat, Ruiz plated a pair with a base knock,
Drew Sassaman laced an RBI double to left field and Henn drove in his second run of the inning with a two-out single to right field.
Saint Elizabeth (11-13, 5-2 United East) got on the board in the third thanks to back-to-back extra-base hits to begin the frame, a single up the middle and a two-out RBI groundout. The home team got one back in the fourth when Floyd doubled to left center and drove in
Moises Gonzalez before Lubic retired the Eagles in order in the bottom half.
In the fifth,
Carlos Irizarry put the finishing touches on the scoring with an RBI triple to right center field that saw him come around on an error on the play. Lubic worked his second straight 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half and the game was delayed due to lightning before being ultimately called after the fifth.
