MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - The bats came to life too late for No. 14/14 Penn State Harrisburg in a 14-5 setback to conference foe Keystone on Wednesday afternoon, April 16.
The Lions (23-8-1, 8-3 United East) managed just two runs and three hits through seven innings and faced a 6-2 deficit after six innings. By the time they put up a crooked number in the bottom of the eighth, Keystone (21-7, 10-1 United East) put things out of reach with three runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and three in the ninth.
Brendan Henn was the lone Penn State Harrisburg player to have a multi-hit outing with a solo home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Alexander Ruiz, Carlos Irizarry and Tim Haftl each drove in one run.
The Giants struck first with a two-run home run in the top of the second and tacked on two more in the top of the fourth. Henn tried to give the offense a jolt by jumping on the first pitch he saw in the the bottom of the fourth and homering to left field but three lineouts ensued and kept the home team from drawing any closer.
Keystone used a two-out, two-RBI double to right field to add to the advantage in the top of the sixth but a Demetre Koutras III double and Ruiz RBI groundout in the home half kept the Lions within striking distance after six.
From there, however, the visitors put up crooked numbers in the seventh, eighth, and ninth stanzas, respectively, while Penn State Harrisburg managed runs in just one of those frames when Henn drove in Drew Sassman with an infield single, Irizarry singled home Blaine Waltimyer and Tim Haftl walked with the bases loaded to pull to within 11-5.
