Women's Basketball Edged In United East Championship Quarterfinals

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 2024-25 campaign came to an end for Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team with a 62-52 loss at Gallaudet in a United East Championship Quarterfinal matchup on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22.

Mikayla Coleman hit a trio of 3-pointers en route to a team-high 15 points, while Sam Shaak was the only other player to reach double digits with 11 points. Ali Lister finished one point short of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points to go along with an impressive seven assists and four steals. Jordan Carpenter also grabbed 10 boards and added eight points, five blocks and three assists.

Penn State Harrisburg (18-9) relied on rookies Shaak and Coleman in the opening quarter, as the duo combined to score all 12 points in the first frame by hitting four vital 3-pointers. However, Gallaudet (16-10) answered back each time and ended the first up by one thanks to a last-second 3-ball from Sunita Schmidjorg.

The visitors grabbed the upper hand in the second quarter, outscoring the Bison 13-8 after finding much-needed momentum from their inside game. Carpenter converted back-to-back layups, while Molli Hogbin, Coleman and JP Ferguson each added a jumper to give the Lions a four-point advantage going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Gallaudet used balanced scoring to make another key push - one that ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. Penn State Harrisburg clawed back multiple times and tied things up on multiple occasions as the final minutes wound down but with 3:21 left on the clock, the home team went on a 9-0 run that forced the Lions to foul in crunch time. The Bison converted their free throws down the stretch to escape their home floor with the win and advance to the conference tournament's semifinal round.
