MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's men's soccer team will host Saturday's United East Championship Game after defeating Penn State Abington in PK's in the semifinal round of the conference championship tournament at the college's multipurpose turf complex on Wednesday night, Nov. 5.
After 90 minutes of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods failed to break the 1-1 draw, Penn State Harrisburg (10-6-3) punched its ticket to this weekend's conference title game with a 5-3 decision in penalty kicks.
Parker Christina buried the deciding PK after
Malachi Abma,
Cole Isaacs,
Liam Gohn and
William Kim each converted their earlier attempts.
Penn State Abington (9-6-5) drew first blood early in the second half when Aramis Shire took advantage of a Penn State Harrisburg foul by firing his ensuing free kick attempt into the top left corner of the net in the 56th minute to give the visitors the lead.
Through swirling wind and rain, Penn State Harrisburg ramped up the offensive aggressiveness in the final minutes and was eventually rewarded when Penn State Abington was whistled for a foul just outside the box. Abma made the visitors pay when he laced a beautiful shot past goalkeeper Brendan Werner with less 6:45 left in regulation.
A pair of overtime periods ended without the deciding score. In penalty kicks, Penn State Harrisburg went 5-for-5, while a crucial miss from Penn State Abington proved the difference. Christina supplied the game-winning conversion that set off a celebratory frenzy and sent Penn State Harrisburg to the conference title game for the fourth time in six seasons.
