MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's soccer team secured a decisive 5-0 victory over Wilson in United East Tournament Quarterfinal action on Saturday evening, Nov. 1 to move onto the conference's semifinal round.
Ava Myers netted a pair of goals to lead the Lions, while
Diana Pon,
Katelyn Monette, and
Teagan Paragon all added a marker each. Pon and Monette both had two assists and Olivia Sgirgnioli and
Julia Hughes had a helper each.
Penn State Harrisburg (12-5-3) was aggressive from the very beginning, as Myers forced Wilson goalkeeper Madison Ebersole to make a save less than two minutes into the match thanks to a center by Monette, before Myers followed her own rebound and put the Lions up 1-0. Pon added a marker of her own a couple minutes later, with a strategically-placed shot in the bottom right corner from outside the 18.
Monette netted a goal of her own in the 23rd minute, when Pon found her feet on the move and Monette put it past the Phoenix goalie to bring the lead to 3-0. The home team added one more marker for good measure before halftime, when Hughes tapped the ball to Paragon, who was in perfect position to score the fourth goal of the night for the Lions.
Myers scored her second goal of the night thanks to a double assist from Sgrignioli and Pon to cap the scoring for the home team. The Lions took their time in the second half to work on several corner kick opportunities and possession plays, while Wilson goalkeeper Bella Scarlato made a handful of key saves to prevent Penn State Harrisburg from extending their lead and the contest concluded with a 5-0 victory for the hosts.
