LATHAM, N.Y. - Thanks to their efforts in three recent victories and a draw, Penn State Harrisburg players Diana Pon and Mackenzie Mowery swept the United East Women's Soccer Weekly Awards. Pon was named the United East Offensive Player of the Week, while Mowery earned conference defensive player of the week recognition.
Pon's most-recent accolade is her second of the season, while Mowery's honor is her first of the year. The pair join Kylie Yap as Penn State Harrisburg players to earn the conference's weekly distinction this fall.Â
Pon provided the offensive spark that helped lead Penn State Harrisburg to a 3-0-1 record during an unbeaten week. The senior came through with one of the biggest goals of her career when she converted the game-winning penalty kick in a 1-0 road victory over No. 4 Messiah on Tuesday night to secure the program's first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent. The Miami, Fla. native followed it up with her second game-winning goal to go along with an assist in a 4-0 win at Cairn the next night. The midfielder added another helper on the game-winning score in a 4-0 victory over Wilson on Saturday afternoon to bring her weekly totals to six points on two goals a pair of goals and two assists.
Mowery helped anchor a defensive unit that did not surrender a goal in any of the four games. The center back helped the Lions secure a shutout victory at Messiah on Tuesday night before posting another clean sheet in a win the next night at Cairn. The Hummelstown, Pa. native's efforts led to another conference shutout victory over Wilson on Saturday before holding regionally-ranked Cortland scoreless on Sunday afternoon. The senior helped hold opponents to just six shots on frame on the week, all of which came in the win over the nationally-ranked Falcons.
The Lions (11-5-3, 7-0 United East) close out conference play when they host Lancaster Bible on Wednesday night.
