WASHINGTON, D.C. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's tennis team opened the 2024-25 season with a pair of contests at Catholic on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14. The Lions began the day with a 5-2 victory over Stevenson before falling 5-2 to the hosts in the day's final outing.
In the team's first match, Anita Liu and Hailey Dey rolled to a 6-1 win over Stevenson's Kara Chwang and Mackenzie Dicke in the No. 2 doubles pairing but the Mustangs (0-2) took two of three to pick up the match's double point.
The Lions responded in doubles play, snagging five of the six decisions to claim the overall victory. Allison Wootton picked up where she left off a year ago with a 6-2, 6-1 win over SU's Shelby Carter in the No. 1 solo matchup, while Liu grabbed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kara Chwang in the No. 3 contest. The No. 4 outing saw Dey defeat Dicke 6-2, 6-1, while Ellen Mugamyizi topped Sofia McCoy 8-7 (5-0) in the No. 5 matchup. Carissa Fallon completed the Penn State Harrisburg run of victories with an 8-6 win against Yana Vaiman in the No. 6 showdown.
Against Catholic, the Lions nabbed a pair of solo victories after falling in all three doubles matchups. Liu came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Meaghan Lanlewski in the No. 3 singles contest before Dey wrapped up the competition with a 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 decision against Mairead O'Hara in the No. 4 outing.
The Lions return to action at Lebanon Valley on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 25.
