MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team suffered a narrow 69-65 United East Conference setback against Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7.
Jordan Carpenter recorded a double-double to lead the home team with 23 points and 16 rebounds, while
Mikayla Coleman tallied 20 points and seven boards of her own.
Giahny Correa also reached double figures with 14 points and
Allison Metzgar had a team-high five assists.
Penn State Harrisburg (5-3, 2-2 United East) had a 13-9 edge going into the second quarter before Penn State Abington (6-2, 3-0 United East) found its momentum thanks to balanced scoring and timely rebounding. The visiting Lions went into halftime up by one and the squad held the advantage for the rest of the contest.
Penn State Abington saw their largest lead in the fourth quarter when Kylie Frey stole the ball and found Nia Newman in the paint to up the score to 51-41 with 8:45 remaining. The hometown Lions went on an 8-0 run with three minutes to go in the game, which was fueled by a 3-pointer from Correa, as well as three foul shots and back-to-back layups from Carpenter.
Unfortunately, the late burst was not enough to erase the marginal deficit with 20 seconds left in the contest and Penn State Abington's Newman converted on three free throws to seal the victory for the visitors.
