Women's Volleyball Opens Conference Play With Sweep

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's volleyball team secured their first conference victory of the season against Saint Elizabeth at the Capital Union Building on Wednesday night, Oct. 2. The Lions (10-5) secured the 3-0 sweep thanks to set scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-19.

 

Brianna Ondishin Ribon had a team-high 13 kills and added nine digs against the Eagles, while Kate Bukowski led on the defensive end with 14 digs. In the setter position, Mackenzy Miller and Brooklynn Sheridan worked together to tally a total of 31 helpers between the two of them. 

 

Saint Elizabeth (6-8) got out to an early lead in the opening set but Penn State Harrisburg took advantage of an 8-0 run that was capped by a kill from Ellie Brown to put the home team up 11-5. The Lions relied heavily on Ondishin Ribon especially in the first set, as she had seven of her total 13 kills in the opener. 

 

After getting the 25-15 win in the first frame, the Eagles once again took the advantage early on however the home team was able to erase the deficit and bring the second set to a 14-14 stalemate halfway through. The two squads traded points until the Lions scored the last four points of the second set that included kills by Ondishin Ribon and Hannah DeGregory and ended the frame 25-20. It was the same story in the final set of the night, as Saint Elizabeth took an early lead but the away team was unable to keep the advantage and the Lions ended the contest with a 25-19 third frame win. 

 

NOTABLES 

- Penn State Harrisburg tallied 43 digs, 38 kills, and 35 assists against the Eagles. 

- Ondishin Ribon was the sole Lion to reach the double-digit kills mark with 13 and added nine digs. 

- M. Miller finished with 18 assists and five digs. 

- Sheridan posted 13 assists, four service aces, three digs, and a pair of kills.

- Bukowski had 14 digs and three assists.

The Lions travel to Bryn Athyn on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 5 for another United East conference matchup at 1 p.m.
