How It Happened

Penn State Harrisburg opened North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with a 3-1 win at Penn State Abington on Wednesday night, Sept. 18.

The Lions (7-3, 1-0 NEAC) took the first set 25-17 before falling 25-22 to the home team (4-9, 0-1 NEAC) in the second game. The visitors responded with a 25-15 third-set win before clinching the match with a 30-28 victory in the fourth and final set.

Trailing 13-10 midway through the opener, the Blue & White used a 15-4 to end the first set, capped by a kill from Anna Ruff off an assist from Alexis Imler. The stretch saw Penn State Harrisburg record nine kills, including two apiece from Brittany Ebaugh, Katelyn Kreider, Cheyanna Buckingham and Ruff.

After dropping the second set, the visitors rebounded with a third-set win thanks to another decisive run that began midway through the game. Leading 12-10, the Lions scored 13 of the final 18 points, including Melanie Sheaffer's kill off an Alyssa Snyder pass before an Abington set error ended things.

The final set saw Penn State Harrisburg erase a 19-16 deficit in crunch time and eventually take the lead at 24-22. The home team gave ground but staved off defeat until a Kreider kill off a Snyder feed made it 29-28 and an Imler service ace closed out the fourth set and secured the overall win the Lions.
