MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Penn State Harrisburg's softball team picked up two more non-conference victories during its South Carolina spring break trip on Wednesday afternoon, holding off Covenant (Ga.) 4-3 in the opener before besting Mitchell 10-2 in six innings in the day's final contest.
GAME 1
The Lions (4-1) jumped out to an early lead before holding off a late rally in a one-run victory over Covenant (Ga.) (10-12) in the team's first outing on Wednesday afternoon.
Ava Allison finished a home run shy of the cycle and scored a run, while Aspen Walker finished 1-for-1 with a walk, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Sierra Sims also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Megan Foltz earned her second win of the season and Kylee Miller secured her first save of the spring.
Penn State Harrisburg took advantage of three Covenant errors in the bottom of the first and used a triple from Allison and a single from Walker to plate the game's first two runs. The Lions tacked on another when Madisen Minney drove in Walker with an RBI groundout later in the stanza.
The Lions eventually added an insurance run in the fourth when Lillian Feltenberger came through with a two-out single down the first base line that pushed Sims across and extended the lead to four through four frames.
Foltz cruised through the first six innings but the Scots (10-12) finally got something going in the top of the seventh, using a leadoff single, a hit by pitch and a pair of walks to cut the deficit in half. Miller came on in relief with one away and Allison made the defensive play of the day when she gunned down Lily Campbell at home plate while attempting to score the tying run from second base. Miller got Megan Porras to fly out in the ensuing at-bat to end the the threat and seal the day's first win.
GAME 2
Penn State Harrisburg (5-1) reached the double-digit scoring mark for the second time in the season's early going to cut short the nightcap in a comfortable win over Mitchell (2-4).
Walker went 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Feltenberger finished 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Allison, Mackenzie Fisher and Ashley Elefante also scored two runs each. Allyson Leidy got her first action of the spring inside the circle, allowing just one run on two hits in four innings en route to earning the win.
For the second straight outing, the Lions put up three runs in the first inning, with three straight singles to being the game leading to Fisher plating thanks to a Walker base knock. Emily Cutman followed with a single that scored Allison and a Sims sac fly brought Walker home later in the frame.
Penn State Harrisburg doubled the advantage in the top of the second, as three Mitchell errors resulted in three unearned runs scored by Feltenberger, Fisher and Allison. The Mariners got one back in the bottom of the third but the Lions responded with three more runs in the fourth thanks to an Elefante RBI single that scored Shannon Williams and a Feltenberger base hit that drove in Sims and Elefante
Mitchell scored one run in the fifth to temporarily stave off the early ending but a Fisher ground ball in the sixth pushed Elefante across before Lexi Bureau finished off her relief appearance and the victory with a scoreless bottom half.
