GETTYSBURG, Pa. - MaKayla Reichel and Michael Alder set new program records to lead the way for the men's and women's cross country teams at Gettysburg's Aubrey Shenk Invitational on Saturday morning, Oct. 17.
Reichel broke her own program record in the women's 6K race, with her stellar effort of 22:58.1 good enough to earn her a 65th-place finish out of 452 total runners. The sophomore became the first athlete in program history to finish a 6K race in less than 23 minutes.
Elsewhere on the women's side, Margaret Cuthie had a big day, with her run of 26:32.5 proving strong enough to rank sixth all-time in program history in a 6K event. She earned a 305th-place finish in the process. Stephanie Carreon was the third women's runner to earn a top-350 finish with a time of 27:52.0, while Marissa Becker, Jocelyn Shields, and Anaya Davenport completed the Penn State Harrisburg contingency.
Alder shined on the men's side, finishing 131st out of 465 total competitors thanks to a record-breaking run of 26:52.2—the fastest by a men's runner in an 8K event in the history of the program.
Zack Gibson got his name into the program record book as well with a run of 29:12.5. His effort was strong enough to secure a 312th-place finish and it stands as the ninth-best 8K time by a men's runner in program history. Steven Rodriguez wasn't far behind, finishing in 332nd thanks to an effort of 29:32.7. Dominic Basselgia and Ben Seiler rounded out the Penn State Harrisburg group of runners.
Fresh off Saturday's record-breaking effort, the Lions will return to action at Lebanon Valley's Last Chance Run Fast Invitational at Union Canal Tunnel Park on Friday afternoon. It is the last scheduled stop before the United East Championships on Oct. 31.
